Culture Contact: The Wendat-French Experience

This engaging full-day program offers students the opportunity to learn about the Huron-Wendat people and their early interactions with French explorers and missionaries. Students will explore our reconstructed longhouse and examine replicas and artifacts to compare everyday life between the Wendat and the French. Through group activities, they will roleplay the experiences of both cultures during first contact and discuss the consequences and benefits of these encounters.

Students will also enjoy seasonal outdoor activities such as lacrosse (available in fall and spring) and snowshoeing (available in winter), along with indoor games like “shut the hatch.” By the end of the day, students should have a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences between the Wendat and the French, as well as the lasting legacy of cultural contact.
