Donate an artifact

A temporary moratorium has been implemented on all donations to our permanent collection. This pause will allow us to prepare for our upcoming collection storage expansion, expected to be complete by late Fall, 2025. During this period, the museum will not be accepting objects for the collection. Please let us know about the objects you are considering for donation and we will follow up with you once the moratorium is lifted.

Donation of Artifacts – Procedures

When an object is offered for donation, staff determine whether the object would be a suitable addition to the collection. If the object has Simcoe County history, if there are not similar objects in the Collection, and provided that the Museum has the space and resources to properly care for it, the object is accepted on a temporary basis. Once at the Museum, staff conduct research about the object and determine if the object should be accepted into the collection.

If an object is refused, the item is returned to the donor, or disposed of according to the wishes of the donor. If an object is accepted, a gift form is signed by both the Museum Curator and Donor, transferring legal ownership of the object from the donor to the Simcoe County Museum. If requested, a tax receipt for the fair market value of the object may be given to the donor for income tax purposes. The tax receipt is sent annually in late January.
